Chapter 15, Section 1

1. How has the role of religion changed in post-Soviet Russia?

The role of religion has changed after the fall of soviet Russia, by most of Russia's population rediscovering their faith. Only 27.4 % of Russia today is still nonreligious.


2. What are Russia’s major ethnic groups?

Russia's major ethnic groups are the Slavs, Caucasian peoples, and the Turkic people.


Creative Writing: Pretend you are a Russian teenager attending high school. Write a short essay designed to persuade your parents—who attended high school during the Soviet era—that post-Soviet education is of higher quality.

The teachings of the Soviet leaders were based on their standards. While today the education is based on real facts and knowledge. During Soviet Russia people weren't allowed to speak their mind. When now we can discuss what we feel is right. So we are in fact getting to know the world and what other people think. Now in school we know different types of government and we can base our own opinions. School now is of much better quality than it was during the Soviet Russia.

1. Who were the ancestors of the ethnic Russians?

The ancestors of the ethnic Russians were Scandinavian warriors.


2. What were the causes of the Soviet Union’s collapse?

The causes of the Soviet Union's collapse were the weakening economy, trouble between workers wages and the privileges of the leaders.


Creative Writing: Write a brief essay that describes the United States’ role in the breakup of the Soviet Union. Be sure to include information about what happened, when it happened, why it happened, how it happened, and who was involved. Outside research may be necessary.

The United States' role in breaking up the soviet union was bringing in a different type of economy. This event was known as the Cold war. It happened around 1945 to 1948. This event wasn't fought directly it was fought between political leaders. This event happened mainly after the Russian revolution.
