chapter 20 homework

Chapter 20, Section 1

1. How has the shifting of tectonic plates affected the development of the landforms of Africa south of the Sahara?

Tectonic plates have affected the development of landforms by either widening or closing the area. Making a plane bigger or a mountain range narrower.

2. How do landforms affect the water systems of Africa south of the Sahara?

Most of the water systems are not affected. Only by drought.

Creative Writing: Write a paragraph about how landforms and water systems in Africa south of the Sahara cause problems for the nations in the region as they try to take advantage of their mineral resources.

The mineral resources in Africa are not distributed evenly throughout all the countries. One country may have more of this, and one may not have any. Also there is not enough money in the countries, for the development of other ways to produce energy. Countries struggle, yet also make it through.

Chapter 20, Section 2

1. In addition to rainfall, what are three of the geographic factors that affect climate in Africa south of the Sahara? Give examples.

Three examples are ocean currents, living by a coast can make the climate very mild and non changing. Wind patterns, they can blow dry dusty winds through out the environment. Also elevation, if the areas high enough the weather could be bad or good.

2. What are the main kinds of climate and vegetation found in Africa south of the Sahara?

The main type of climates are tropical wet, tropical dry, steppe, desertification, desert, and midlatitude climates. The vegetation found here are rain forests, grasslands, deserts, and fertile lands.

Creative Writing: The Great Plains in the United States and Canada and Africa’s Serengeti Plain are both vast grasslands. Write a paragraph comparing the two regions.

Both are the same because they both can produce crops. Both were once covered by grass. Both can support life because of the vegetation. Theses grasslands are like each other in so many ways.

chapter 19 homework

Chapter 19, Section 1

1. How does physical geography affect farming and fishing in North Africa, Southwest Asia, and Central Asia?

A lot of the land in North Africa is not suitable for farming. Yet most of the land in the Asia areas are better for farming yet most of the land is used for living. Most of the countries in this area use fish in their everyday diet. So fishing is big in this area.

2. How are improvements in transportation and communications changing life in the region?

Over the years many more motor ways have been installed with the growing number of vehicles. Also communications have developed because more of the local countries have gotten more advanced.

Creative Writing: Write a paragraph comparing some of the similarities and differences in the ways people earn a living, communicate with each other, and travel in Southwest Asia, North Africa, and Central Asia and in the United States and Canada.

Around the middle east there are a lot of checkpoints that are present when you go into a certain area. Much like our borders going in and out of the country. Also most of the land in Africa is desert so there is really no use for it. But in America and Canada not a lot of the land is dessert so there is a use for most of the land in North America.

Chapter 19, Section 2

1. How have people in the region dealt with scarce water resources?

People have dealt with the scarce water resources in the area by collecting as much fresh water from springs, rivers, oases, aquifers, and desalination.

2. What are the causes and effects of three of the major environmental problems in the region?

The cause of diseases and the soil crisis from the Aswan high dam is the dam of the river. Another major crisis is the war. The causes are fights and the effects have been oil leakages that hurt the environment. The final problem is the shrinking of the Aral sea. The causes are pollution and over fishing. The effects are fish populations dieing down, and also the water level has dropped.

Creative Writing: Write a paragraph agreeing or disagreeing with the following statement: It is necessary for all of the countries in North Africa, Southwest Asia, and Central Asia to cooperate to develop plans and technologies to bring more freshwater to the region.

I disagree with that statement. Some countries have tried to bring water to their country and some countries have been lazy. So why should the countries that have invested many dollars into systems that transport water have to provide and develop plans for countries that are lazy.

chapter 17 homework

Chapter 17, Section 1

1. What land and water features dominate North Africa, Southwest Asia, and Central Asia?

There are many mountains that cover North Africa, Southwest Asia, and Central Asia. Also the Sahara desert covers most of northern Africa and southwest Asia. This area is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Arabian Sea, Indian ocean, Gulf of Oman, and both the Black and Caspian Sea.

2. Why is much of the world economically dependent on North Africa, Southwest Asia, and Central Asia?

Most of the world is dependent on North Africa, Southwest Asia, and Central Asia
because this area produces a lot of oil and natural gas. The rest of the world lacks this ability so they are heavily dependent on them.

Creative Writing: Agree or disagree with the statement: The supply of water in North Africa, Southwest Asia, and Central Asia is more critical to the region’s security than the supply of oil.

I agree. Water will keep the people alive. Without the water there would be no people to drill the oil. Yet oil is one of the main money makers for that area. Without water there would be no way to survive, epically in those harsh conditions.

Chapter 17, Section 2

1. How do the climates of North Africa, Southwest Asia, and Central Asia differ?

Most of north Africa is desert, also most of southwest Asia is desert. Yet there are the more tropical climates thrown in and around the desert area. Central Asia is also very desert, yet there is temperate grasslands to the north.

2. How are the agricultural activities of North Africa, Southwest Asia, and Central Asia affected by the climate regions?

Since most of Africa and Southwest and Central Asia are deserts, farming is a challenge. So when a population develops around a river, like Egypt, the civilization is dependent on that water source to also grow the food.

Creative Writing: The steppe climate areas of North Africa, Southwest Asia, and Central Asia, and the steppe climate in the Great Plains of the United States and Canada are similar. Cereal crops and livestock are important commodities in each region. What are some similarities and differences between the agricultural economies of each region?

Both areas have produced crops because of the area there in. Both areas have grass that can feed livestock that are grown to be sold around the world.
