Chapter 27, Section 1

1. Where did East Asia’s ideas and traditions originate?

From the Han dynasty.

2. What languages do the people of China speak?

Most people speak Mandarin dialect of the Han Chinese language.

Creative Writing: Write a paragraph that compares Chinese health care, religion, or education before, during, and after the “Great Leap Forward.”

Now the Chinese government is pushing that everyone knows how to read and write. But before there was a brief period of time that only few people in the country knew how to read and write.


Chapter 27, Section 2

1. How is the population of Japan distributed?

Most people live in valleys or on coastal plains.


2. How did Japan build an empire in the 1900s and how did it come to an end?

Japan was going towards a democracy, yet military leaders gained too much power and over ruled the government. So that was when they were in WW II. When the United States bombed them their empire ended. After that they went to democracy and built a world power.

Although Japan’s population is ethnically homogeneous, its culture has been influenced by many other cultures. Write a paragraph that describes at least two ways that Japan’s culture has been influenced by other cultures.

Japan likes to adapt different cultures from different countries. For example they like the game of baseball. That game originated from America. Also English has influenced their language.

Chapter 27, Section 3

1. How did Korea first react to contact with the West?

They responded by creating a close door mentality.

2. On what is the Korean way of life based?

Confucianism is what life is based on.

Creative Writing: Although North and South Korea are predominantly ethnically homogeneous, a cultural divergence has taken place between the two countries. Write a paragraph that describes the cause of this cultural divergence and lists some of its effects.

Since North Korea is communist the government tells them what to read, write draw, and more stuff. Yet since South Korea is open to the world their governments let them believe in,read, and draw whatever they want to.

Chapter 24, Section 1

1. How is India’s large population distributed?

India's large population is distributed by most of the population in urban areas while the rest are in farming villages.

2. What two major world religions helped to shape India’s history and culture?

Hinduism and Buddhism helped shape the early culture of India.

Creative Writing: Pretend you are an Indian person who has moved from a rural farm community to one of India’s largest cities. Write a paragraph to a relative that describes what it is like to live in the city.

The city is packed with millions of people searching for a better job. I am one of them. The work is hard with not to much pay. Even though i have other people working in the family. The cities are filthy.


Chapter 24, Section 2

1. Why are increasing populations and urbanization a problem in both Pakistan and Bangladesh?

The increasing population is a problem because they can not feed their entire population.

2. What contributions to the arts have Pakistan and Bangladesh made?

They have made visual art, dance and song, and also literature.

Creative Writing: Write a paragraph that summarizes the history of the Indian and Pakistani claims on the Kashmir region, and why the conflict over the Kashmir region is dangerous to both the region and the world.

There was a prince that lived in the area. Once Pakistani people invaded the area the prince fled and gave that state to India. Now both countries are fighting over it. Pakistani people were found to have made nuclear bombs. If this fighting keeps up then the world could be in turmoil.

Chapter 24, Section 3

1. What contributions to the arts have the countries in the region made?

They have made huge temples that are now found in most of China and India. Also their dances are popular.

2. What are the major religions in the region?

The major religions are Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam.

Creative Writing: Several countries in the region currently face challenges with both health care and low literacy rates. The United States is considering providing foreign aid to help one of the countries address only one of these challenges. Which of these two challenges do you think is the most important to address? Write a paragraph that is designed to persuade a U.S. government official of your opinion.

I honestly think that we should help their education. Once their education is fixed then they can fix their health care program how ever they want to. If we fix only their health care program they will eventually run into problems down the line. Yet if they have an education and fix the heath care however they want to then we don't have to fly back down there and help them again. So its a go down there once and then come back.

Chapter 22, Section 1

1. What are three of the problems cash-crop production has created for the economies of the countries of the region?

Three problems are they are heavily dependent on the crop, so a bad season would hurt the economy. Farmers have problems because they are trying to meet their own food standard also, and when the best land is taken meeting that need is hard. Finally, overproduction of the land.


2. What are three ways that transportation and communications in the region are changing?

Nigeria and Uganda are building new and improved railway systems. Telephone lines have tripled over four years. And satellites have increased radio and television programs.


Creative Writing: Write a paragraph about the possible reasons that countries in the region have taken on enormous debt that they have been unable to repay. Consider the economic activities, transportation and communications, and trade relationships of the countries of Africa south of the Sahara.

The region has a huge debt because of all the money they were loaned by countries that are not in the continent Africa. Yet for the 18 poorest countries their debt has been canceled by G8 members, and Bono. Most of this money has been used to improved communication and transportation.


Chapter 22, Section 2

1. What are three reasons food shortages have occurred in parts of Africa south of the Sahara?

Three reasons are droughts, wars, and famine.


2. What are three of the steps African countries south of the Sahara are taking to protect their environment?

Three steps are planting new trees, laws protecting animals, and no more of the elephants are being killed.


Creative Writing: Famine and war are among the threats to the people of Africa south of the Sahara, and desertification and poaching are among the threats to the environment and wildlife. Write a paragraph describing how the threats are related, and how reducing the threats to the people can reduce the threats to environment and wildlife.

If threats stop people will stop killing animals. IF the threats to the animals and environment are reduced most of the debates about saving the areas will either stop soon or eventually fade. Until peace about saving the animals and environment is reached people will reduce their threats.
