Chapter 33, Section 1

1. What major indigenous groups live in Australia and New Zealand?

The Aborigines live in Australia, and the Maori in New Zealand.

2. How does the standard of living in the urban areas of Australia and New Zealand compare with that of the more rural areas?

Since more people live in the urban areas there is a higher standard of living. Since less people live in the rural areas there are less things that are available.

Creative Writing: Compare and contrast how and why the different groups that make up the population of Australia and New Zealand today first came to settle the region.

They probably came in boats from south east Asia, and when they came they stayed. The people were probably there for a long time.


Chapter 33, Section 2

1. How does everyday life in the region reflect cultural diversity?

Because every day in that region is a day that you get to practice those traditions that your country holds dear.

2. How did European colonization adversely impact the region?

Since they brought diseases many people were killed. With less people they couldn't practice their beliefs, epically when the Europeans were trying to force their way of thought.

Creative Writing: Imagine that you are a tourist traveling among the islands of any part of Oceania in an outrigger canoe. Describe one day of your travels as a journal entry. Be sure to describe the peoples and cultures, as well as their activities.

As I'm traveling i see different islands go by and by. The weather is amazing. So many different people and they water is so blue. People going about their different daily lives its amazing to see whats going on where.

Chapter 25, Section 1

1. How does agriculture provide a living for most of South Asia’s people?

Agriculture is a job that most south Asians can do. Also the cash crops provided in this area are a great way to support an economy.

2. Which countries in South Asia have a free press?

India, Bangladesh and Pakistan are the three countries that have free press.

Creative Writing: Which part of South Asia would you most like to visit? Write a paragraph that describes why you think this is the best country for tourism and use specific examples to support your position.

I would like to visit the country of India. There are many different sights to see, including mountains, temples, and much more. The temples of the different religions in the area would be very interesting to go and visit. Also to go and visit the holy spots in the country would be interesting. Or even taking a trip on the railway. Many different spots in the country would be truly amazing to see.

Chapter 25, Section 2

1. What factors have led to much of the internal violence in South Asia?

The factors that cause most of the fighting is religion, political leaders, government, discrimination, and also class systems.

2. What is a negative consequence of rapid industrialization in the region?

A negative consequence is air pollution, water pollution and crowded cities.

Creative Writing: Pretend you are a government official in South Asia. Your job is to write a short essay designed to convince poor rural populations to stop illegal logging and hunting of endangered animals. Be sure to acknowledge reasons why these people would want to be allowed to cut down trees or hunt endangered animals, and then provide arguments why they should not do so.

People of this city, it is greatly important that you do not cut and kill theses animals and trees. I know the fur and bark are great money sources. Yet it is important that these things are not killed. Don't you want your great grand children to see these animals roaming wildly? Or the air to be much cleaner because of the trees? Think about these questions the next time you go and kill some trees or animals.

Chapter 32, Section 1

1. How do mountains, plateaus, and lowlands differ in Australia and New Zealand?

In Australia there are few mountains that break up the normally level surface. In new Zealand there are snow tipped mountains and emerald hillsides and sandy beaches.

2. How have volcanoes and continental shelves formed the islands of Oceania?

By the plates colliding and volcanoes erupting new islands are formed.

Creative Writing: Of the two largest islands of New Zealand—North Island and South Island—which would be the best to visit on vacation? Provide examples to support your position.

I think that both island nations would be wonderful to visit because they both offer sandy beaches which would be good to tan on. Also if you wanted to go swimming the beaches are filled with natural coral reefs. And the mountains would be fantastic to view. Both islands are wonderful to view.

Chapter 32, Section 2

1. What geographic extremes create the differences in climates and vegetation of Australia, Oceania, and New Zealand?

In Australia there is desert across the entire continent. In New Zealand and Oceania its mostly shrubs and grasses and a large plateau.

2. Why does most of Oceania have a tropical rain forest climate?

Because they have that type of vegetation.

Creative Writing: Pretend you are a travel writer who has been assigned to write a tourist brochure for a destination in Australia, Oceania, or New Zealand. Drawing on your knowledge of the climates and vegetation in the region, write at least one paragraph that vividly describes at least one destination in the region to potential tourists.

Lets go to Australia! There are many different cultures… also there are many different people there too. Between the hot climates inland and cool climates outside there are many different animals around the country.

1. Why is rice farming the most important agricultural activity in Southeast Asia?

because it is a major export and it is a food that everyone in the country eats.

2. Why are the countries in the region industrializing at different rates?

IT depends on how much resources you have and how many workers the country has.

Creative Writing: Write a paragraph describing how the economies of Southeast Asia are becoming more interdependent. What factors are driving this change?

This change is influenced by the world also. But each country sees that there is different things that other countries have that they need.

Chapter 31, Section 2

1. What dangers are posed by volcanoes, floods, and typhoons in Southeast Asia?

Ash will fall, also destruction of land, houses, and schools.

2. How has economic progress increased environmental pollution in the region?

When the country is gaining more money yet is polluting the environment they don't want to stop because it could destroy their growing environment.

Creative Writing: The people of Southeast Asia face many challenges with both natural and man-made environmental issues. Identify what you think is the most important challenge and write a paragraph designed to convince readers of the importance of addressing the issue.

The volcanoes are the biggest threat. Because you don't know when they will blow up. Also they kill the fastest. And the ash infects everyone around the world.

1. What makes up the physical geography of Southeast Asia?

volcanoes and mountains.

2. How do rich natural resources affect Southeast Asia’s economy?

There are fossil fuels, minerals and gems.

Creative Writing: Write a paragraph that describes at least one way that the people of Southeast Asia depend on its waterways.

People rely on water ways for transportation, communication, and food. The silt from the water helps people have rich farm lands.


Chapter 29, Section 2

1. What weather pattern influences the region’s climates?

Wet and dry influence the regions climate.

2. What are the region’s main climate types?

Wet climates and tropical dry climates.

Creative Writing: Think about the pros and cons of Singapore’s change from a dense rain forest to an urban area. Take a position either for or against another area working toward this type of urbanization, and write a paragraph that defends your position.

I would be for it. If the government wants to do it then i say go ahead and do it. Because its their government and we cant tell them what to do. It could also bring in more money for the economy.

1. What types of governments and economies do East Asian countries have?

Private owned and controlled by the government.

2. What economic activities play an important role in East Asia?

Agriculture, industry, and trade and communication.

Creative Writing: Despite China’s record of human rights violations, the United States granted it full trading privileges and the country has also been admitted to the World Trade Organization. Pick a position either for or against these decisions and write a paragraph designed to persuade others of your point of view.

Well how could you pick a side. Either side you choose there is always going to be a down side. Go against China and crush our economy. Stay with them and your just letting them do whatever they want.

Chapter 28, Section 2

1. How have industrialization and urbanization in East Asia affected the environment?

East Asia uses so much fossil fuels that there is so much pollution in the air around that area. Yet farmers have found a way to use all the possible land to farm with in the area.

2. What naturally occurring destructive forces does East Asia regularly face?

Flooding and volcanoes are natural destructive forces.

Creative Writing: Write a paragraph that describes the steps East Asian countries are taking to solve environmental problems.

There not really doing anything..... Other than building dams that will even produce more environmental problems in China. Japan is leading the clean up, even though they use large amounts of electricity for their cities. Korea's and Taiwan are just making more and more power plants to make their energy needs.

Chapter 27, Section 1

1. Where did East Asia’s ideas and traditions originate?

From the Han dynasty.

2. What languages do the people of China speak?

Most people speak Mandarin dialect of the Han Chinese language.

Creative Writing: Write a paragraph that compares Chinese health care, religion, or education before, during, and after the “Great Leap Forward.”

Now the Chinese government is pushing that everyone knows how to read and write. But before there was a brief period of time that only few people in the country knew how to read and write.


Chapter 27, Section 2

1. How is the population of Japan distributed?

Most people live in valleys or on coastal plains.


2. How did Japan build an empire in the 1900s and how did it come to an end?

Japan was going towards a democracy, yet military leaders gained too much power and over ruled the government. So that was when they were in WW II. When the United States bombed them their empire ended. After that they went to democracy and built a world power.

Although Japan’s population is ethnically homogeneous, its culture has been influenced by many other cultures. Write a paragraph that describes at least two ways that Japan’s culture has been influenced by other cultures.

Japan likes to adapt different cultures from different countries. For example they like the game of baseball. That game originated from America. Also English has influenced their language.

Chapter 27, Section 3

1. How did Korea first react to contact with the West?

They responded by creating a close door mentality.

2. On what is the Korean way of life based?

Confucianism is what life is based on.

Creative Writing: Although North and South Korea are predominantly ethnically homogeneous, a cultural divergence has taken place between the two countries. Write a paragraph that describes the cause of this cultural divergence and lists some of its effects.

Since North Korea is communist the government tells them what to read, write draw, and more stuff. Yet since South Korea is open to the world their governments let them believe in,read, and draw whatever they want to.
